Why Do People Do Family Web Sites?

6 Families Tell Their Stories

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Why do people write personal Web sites about their families and post them online? Why do they put up pictures of their kids? Find out from these people and see their personal Web sites.

You've seen them. They're everywhere on the Net. Web sites exclusively dedicated to showing off the authors family. They have baby pictures and stories about their little ones. Some even include pets. A lot of them have separate pages for each family member. Have you wondered why someone would put up such intimate information about their families. Here are the answers you seek.

  • MD Kidz - Welcome To My Reality - Watch Her Family Grow On This Personal Web Site
I started the "Welcome to MY Reality" theme wayyyy back in '92 when I first started tinkering with html. Then, it was just a site to tell the world about me, and a place for my online friends to get to know a little more about me. It's evolved since then, to be my testing grounds for new code and images. I still use it for learning, but it's primary function is still the same; to let my online friends, and family see my children grow and learn.

  • Glory's Creations - Personal Web Site about Marfan Kids
My goal in this lifetime is to get the word out about Marfan Syndrome so people don't die like my father did. I figure that any way I can get people to my site, they are bound to eventually get to my Marfan pages. I especially want kids to read about Marfan kids and have a little compassion and respect for these brave little souls.

  • The Buchanan Family Web - Personal Web Site About The Kids
I registered my last name back in 94/95 because I was developing a web site for Sega (Sonic the hedgehog?) and the name was available. I created the Web site when the CDA was a big deal in the Internet medium and I realized that there really wasn't much on the Web specifically for children.
The site features my own kids, movie and music as well as many links to child friendly places to visit. I did this to create a "starting point" for other children that were looking at the web and needed a safe place to surf. This has been very successful in that a majority of the visits(according to my logfiles) come from K-12.edu (Kindergarden though 12th grade classrooms) site. So I know that teachers are using this site as a starting point for kids.
On a personal note, I also created it because I am divorced and the kids aren't living with me full time yet so I use it to keep in contact with them through email.

  • Wrights In Alaska Homepage - Personal Web Site About Moving To And Living In Alaska
In 1994, I came up to Alaska on a camping trip. 4 weeks later, I handed my camping companion (my brother) a plane ticket home, and called my folks to have them send me a few select items-- I was settling down. My family and friends were mostly in Maryland and Iowa, so they were none too pleased about this development. Anchorage is over 5,000 road miles away (or an expensive 8 hour plane ride). To make matters worse, my brother and his wife moved up a year later. A year after that, my parents came up here to retire.
Throughout the whole experience, I've been inundated with calls about my life. What the heck was I doing in Alaska? What was it like? Had I seen igloos? Were there any women?
Thus, akwrights.com was born. It's purpose is to keep friends and family appraised of what's going with our lives up here, as well as to give them a taste of what it's live to live up here (amazing!) with photos, recipes, and general info. We also have a "Wrightpages" section, which is a page of current e-mail addresses (as mailto links) for all the friends and family we have around the world. And, I guess, deep down it's a propaganda piece to try to persuade the people we care about that it might just be worth making the trip up here.

  • My Kool Kids - Personal Web Site About Life In The Military With Kids
I started my page when my second child was born because we knew we would be moving far away from family and friends. With a spouse in the military, we are always far from home and don't get to see family very often, once a year if we are lucky. So, basically my page was started to keep family and friends up to date as to where we are and what we are doing and so that they could watch the kids grow with us.

  • Pennell Domain - Ancestor Web Site For The Family
Our / My thoughts are of the future generations of the family. My desire is to have a place for all our children to access info on their ancestors, ( even to the point of glimpses of our humor, lifestyles, weaknesses and the like ).... If you are to ' know yourself, ' I feel you must FIRST know who you are descended from.
