Web Gems & Adding Audio

By , About.com Guide

Step 8 - Web Gems

Q. What is a Web Gem?

    A. A Web Gem is something fun you can add to your site. It can be something that adds interactivity, such as a guestbook, form or file. It can be something that adds direction to your site, such as a search box or current news box. It can be something that adds money to your pocket or information about your visitors, such as an affiliate program banner or counter. It can be video or audio.

Several of these Web Gems are offered here for your use. To add one of them, click on the icon that says "Add Web Gem". On the next page, choose where you want it to be on your page. Then choose which one you want to add. It will then be added to your page.

If you want to add something that is not offered here, you can do that too. There is an option to "Build Your Own Web Gem". When you click on this, you will be brought to a page where you can enter code for the Web Gem you want to add.

With this option, you can add banners from affiliate programs, news and weather headlines, search boxes or any number of other tools.

Step 9 - Adding Audio

Adding an audio file is possible too. While on the screen with the list of Web Gems, choose "File Download". On the next page, click on "Upload", then "Browse". Find the file from your computer and upload it.

After downloading the file to your site, you can create a link to it on your page several different ways:

    1. When the list of downloaded files comes up, after downloading the file, click on "Choose", change the text you want them to see, click "Done" and a link will be added to your page that your readers can click on to hear the file.
Tip: Even if you are going to do it one of the other ways, I suggest doing this first and deleting it later. This way you can play the file and get the address of it from the "address" box on your audio player.

    2. When the list of downloaded files comes up, after downloading the file, click on "Cancel". When back on the page, click on "Add A Link", decide where you want the link, then choose "To another Web page". Enter the text you want your reader's to see, add the address of the file (see tip above) and click "Done".

    3. When the list of downloaded files comes up, after downloading the file, click on "Cancel". When back on the page, click on "Add Picture" then choose where on the page you want the link to be. Choose the picture you want associated with the sound file, whether it be a picture of someone or a clip art graphic, (There is a "Sound and Video" category in the clip art section).

After you have chosen the picture and you are back on your page, click on the "Edit" button next to the picture. Change what ever settings you want for the picture and scroll down to the "Make this picture a link" section. Enter the address of your file and click "Done". You now have an audio file on your site.

    4. When the list of downloaded files comes up, after downloading the file, click on "Cancel". When back on your page click "Add Web Gem" and tell it where you want the link to be. Then click "Build Your Own Web Gem" link. In the box you can add your own HTML to add the link to your page.
