Paul and Kerri's web site

About.com Rating 5

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Age - How old are you?
I'm 35 ... and I'm a gentleman so I'm not disclosing Kerri's!

When did you start your site?
I started my UK site *way* back in the mists of Internet time. :->
The Canadian site has only been up a couple of months and is still growing.

Marital Status?
Living together; we got engaged last year and are planning our wedding for the second half on 2002.

Occupation - What kind of work do you do?

I am currently looking for a software development project manager's position. (Keep plugging away!) Kerri works for "Canada's foremost centre for contemporary culture" (according to their web site).

Hobbies - What do you like to do, besides keep this site?
We play badminton when we get time; watch motor racing; listen to rock and blues music; Kerri has been involved in dragonboats for many years.

Location - Where are you from? Where are you now?
I'm from England (been in Toronto a whole four months!); Kerri's Canadian.

Why did you start writing your Web site?
More because I'm a techie than an egomaniac; it's a way of learning new technologies and techniques.

Why do you write a site about you?
Because it's what I know most about :->
It's also a way to share photos and stories with friends and family back in the UK.

Do you communicate with readers of your site?
Yes; I've "met" other Henman's around the world, but we've yet to work out if/how we're related.

How much email feedback do you receive from your site? Is it mainly positive or negative?

I probably only get a handful of emails a week, but there's only been one or two negative ones over all the years I've been doing this.

Have you met any new friends because of the site?
Yes, and re-met some old ones - people I was at school/university with or used to work with.

Has your motivation changed over time?
Not really; the site has been completely re-written many times, but the main aim is still the same.

How has it changed your life?
Kerri and I met online(!!), although not directly as a result of my web site.

Do your friends and family know you keep this site/read it? If so have you had any really negative experiences as a result? If not why?
My family are worried that perhaps we're putting too much information on the site, although I don't think there's anything there which can't be discovered through other means. We are careful with photos of Kerri's little niece and nephew, though; the photos are not in a public area.

How has your Web site benefited you? Your friends? Or total strangers?

It keeps me aware of technical changes (browsers, languages, etc.) ... and it keeps me off the streets. :->
I've had a few emails from strangers who say they've found information on my site that they've been after for ages.

If you had to do it over again from the beginning, what would you change?
I do start over every so often, so I'm happy with it all at the moment because it's still quite fresh.

What are your favorite things on your site?
It's usually the thing that I did most recently. I put a [a herf="http://www.henman.ca/paul/diary.htm]diary page up recently and that's still entertaining.
Kerri got a kick out of the Pampered Chef page that I put together for a party she hosted recently.

When looking at other people's Web sites what do you look for as a viewer?
I look for ideas to borrow (steal!), but more often see how it shouldn't be done.

What is "one word" that would describe your site?
Mine! :->

Because of your site do you consider yourself a Web celebrity, an exhibitionist, a public figure, a writer, an innovator, or something different?
A bit sad?

How do you tackle the mechanics of Web design and how do you deal with your frustrations when you can't do what you envision.
Design ideas normally come to me either in bed or in the shower!
I don't get frustrated if I can't instantly produce what I want - that's why it's a technical challenge for me. I won't use any authoring tools (just a text editor), so I have to understand how each piece of code works.

Why do you think people are interested in you and what you have to say?
I'm not convinced they are; I'm sure different people visit the site for different things.

What compels you to design beautiful pages and to write from the heart (beyond just the usual question of "why write a Web site")?
Too much time on my hands?
