Backup Your Web Site, Just In Case

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Back up your Web site because you never know when your hosting service will decide not to be a hosting service anymore. That's not the only reason either. There could be a server crash or something worse that deletes your site. There could be something on your site that makes your hosting service decide to delete you or maybe you get too much traffic, or not enough. Poof, gone. It happened to me, it can happen to you.

If you create your Web pages on your computer, just keep a copy of the pages on your computer. Then you won't need to download the pages off your site. Then you can save them somewhere safe afterwards if you want to.

Download Web Pages

  1. Go To Your Web Site - Type the address of your site into the address bar on your browser.

  2. Go To The Page You Want To Save - Click on the link of the page you want to go to.

  3. File, Save As - On the menu at the top of your browser click on "File" then click on "Save As" or "Save Page As".

  4. Name Page And Choose Location - When the "Save As" box pops up choose where on your computer you want to save your Web page. Then give it a unique name or keep the name it already has. Now click "Save".

    Save To a Disk

  1. Insert Disk - Put the disk into your disk drive or your burnable CD into the CD-ROM.

  2. Go To Your File - Go to "My Computer" and open the window for the drive your disk is in. Also open the "C" drive and go to the place where your file is located.

  3. Drag and Drop - Now click on the file and hold the button down. While holding the button down drag the file over to the disk drive screen. Your file is now on your disk.

  4. If You Are Burning a CD - You may need to use the software that came with your CD burner to save your files to CD. Just follow the directions on the software and your files will be saved to your CD.

    Save To Online Service

  1. Sign Up - Sign up with an online file storage service.

  2. Upload - Using the file upload system that the file storage site offers, upload your files.
