Here are some simple things you can do to your Web site that will make sure that when you submit your pages to search engines they will add them. After checking your Web site to make sure it is optimized using these 15 simple tips you will need to submit your pages to the search engines. You can do that by going to each of the search engines separately and submitting them or by using a site submission tool.
DO make the "title" of your page simple and to the point using a key phrase. This is the title in the "title" tag at the top of your script. Search engines look at this title for keywords. If your site is about making shirts by sewing them then a good title might be something like, "Sewing Shirts - Making shirts from patterns".
DO add your key words and phrase to your meta description more than once. Using the keywords in the above title a good meta description for this page might be something like, "Sewing shirts from patterns is easy if you know what you're doing. Let me show you how to make shirts using patterns. Sewing shirts using patterns is a great way to save money.".
DO NOT add meta keywords to your site that don't have anything to do with your site. If your site is about sewing shirts from patterns then you should use keywords like, "sewing, shirts, patterns" and not "money, knitting, pants". This may seem obvious but some people might add words that they think will get people to their sites instead of words about their site. Search engines may not add a listing for your site if you do this.
DO make your site look professional. Some search engines have people who look over your site before your site is added. If your site looks like a kindergardener did it, but it's not done by a kindergardener, then it probably won't be added.
DO create quality content on your site. Your site should contain original content and should be relevant to you or whatever it is you are writing your site about. Don't plagiarize and make sure your writing is readable and legible.
DO NOTuse the same meta keyword too many times on one page. How many is different for different search engines but generally you don't want to use the same keywords near each other or more than three times. (ex. "sewing, sewing, sewing, sewing" or "sewing, sewing, shirts, patterns")
DO create many pages. Small Web sites are sometimes not listed on some search engines especially those search engines that have real people reviewing the site before it's added.
DO make sure all links are working. If your site has a lot of broken links then the people that come to your site won't ever come back. This is why a search engine won't list it, they only want to list quality sites and a site with a lot of broken links is not a quality site.
DO NOTuse re-directs unless your site has moved and you are sending people to the new site. Search engines look down on pages that are created just for the sake of getting people to a Web site. These are often known as doorway pages and are considered a no-no.
DO spell check. Nothing is worse then trying to read something that is full of misspellings and bad grammar, unless that's what your site is about.
DO make sure it is easy to navigate. If people can't find what they are looking for on your site then they will leave. Remember, some search engines are run by real people.
DO NOT duplicate pages. Search engines can tell when you are doing this when they spider your site. They think you are trying to fool them and get more than one of the same page listed, they don't like this.
DO make it visually appealing. The better your site looks the better the chance that the real person looking at your site will list your site with the search engine they represent.
DOmake it interesting. If your site has little or no content there is little chance that it will get listed.
DO NOT use "Under Construction". Never, ever, ever use something that indicated your site is "under construction" and don't try to list your site until it is complete enough to look like a complete site. The truth is, if your site is a good site it will always be under construction. You should constantly be updating and adding to your site to keep it fresh and interesting.
