From , former About.com Guide

There are a few tips you need to know when you're conversing on the Internet. Whether you're friending on Facebook, IM'ing your friends, leaving messages in a forum, sending emails, or whatever, believe it or not, there are some things you need to know first.

By following these simple tips Facebook will become a fun and very useful place for you to visit daily. You'll not only get information on what your friends are up to, you may also get your daily dose of zen. With photos, daily prose, help on topics you're interested in and much more, Facebook can be a lot of different things.

  1. Don't use all capital letters - Writing in all capitals is a way of screaming on the Internet and will be taken that way. Please don't do it. It's really annoying to all involved. If you really want to shout it out, by all means, use those capital letters. Just remember to tone it down the rest of the time.

  2. Use your real name - Facebook is known for finding friends. You can't very well do that if you don't use your real name.

  3. Fill out your profile - If someone's going to find out anything about you, then you're going to need to fill out your Facebook profile. Let people know who you are. Don't give out anything private or anything that could be unsafe. Just give people information so they know who they're reading about.

  4. Connect with other people - This is what Facebook is all about, so get out there and find your friends. Find the people you know in real life and find old friends too. Connect with them on Facebook, always know what they're up to and keep them updated on your life.

  5. Be yourself - Be real, don't be fake. What's the point. Facebook is all about keeping your friends updated on the current events in your life and chatting about things you're doing. Don't make up stuff, there's really no reason for it. Just be yourself.

  6. Update, update, update - The more you add to your Facebook, the better your Facebook will be. Try to add a new post at least once a day. This will let people know what you're up to and also let them know that you're thinking about them.

  7. Leave comments - If you're reading through your friend's posts and you come across a post that makes you stop and think, leave a message. Let them know what you're thinking. This gives them a chance to respond back to you if they want. Or, at least they'll know you were paying attention.

  8. Join groups - Facebook groups are a great way to meet people with the same interests and issues you have in your life. Give a Facebook group a chance once you've joined. Post your own questions and comments to the group and get involved.

  9. Add photos - Photos make the Internet a more interesting place. Facebook makes it really easy to add photos, so add a few of your own. Let people leave comments on the photos. Photos can sometimes be a good conversation starter.
