Getting Online
After you have chosen which editor to use the next thing you will need to consider is where to place your Web site. There are many home page hosting providers on the Web to choose from. You can choose which one you want by deciding how much space you need or by the features they offer.
Some of these hosting services offer online editors for your use. This may be one of the deciding factors for you when you are deciding which service to use. Some of them offer things like email addresses to go along with your account, domain name hosting, file upload (so you don't need FTP) and themes to help you create great pages.
About's Hosting Service
If you don't already have a place to host your site and you don't know how to choose a place then I would like to suggest that you use one of the hosting service offered by Trellix or the one offered by Freeservers. Trellix offers lots of templates for you to choose from so you can create your site without any HTML if you want to. They also offer an advanced HTML editor for those of you who want to do it the old fashioned way, with HTML. Best of all, it's free.
When you have decided which hosting service is right for you, all you need to do is sign up for your new account. Just fill out the member sign up form.
If you are using Trellix you will be brought to a page where you can choose to "Learn More" or "Start Building". If you need instruction on how to use the templates then by all means click on "Learn More" but if you are ready to get started click on "Start Building".
When you are ready to start building your site you will be given many options. If you choose to use a template then I suggest using the one called "Weblog (Online Diary)". Just click on it and start building your site.
If you would rather use HTML and create the page yourself then click where it says "All My Sites" at the bottom of the page. On the next page click on where it says "Account Management and Advanced Tools" then on "File Manager".
From the file manager you can create your site. To add a new folder to your directory click on "New Directory" and give it a name. To upload files click on the pull-down menu that says "Upload Via" and choose from either ".ZIP file" or "single files (8)". These will bring you to a page where you can browse your hard drive for the files you want to upload to your site and then upload them.
To create a new HTML file right from your file manager you will need to click on "Account Management" then on "FreeForm Editor". This will bring you to a page where you can create your new page from scratch. Enter your code then click on "Save" to save the page. If you want to open a previously created page click on "Open" and choose the page to edit. If at anytime during creation of your page you want to see what your page looks like without saving you can click on "Preview". When you are finished creating and editing your pages click on "Done".
If you are using another hosting service you will find that it is also easy to use. Most of them are made to be used by beginners.
If you have any questions while you are setting up your site, or at any time, please post them in the online classroom in my forum that is set up for this tutorial.
