Drag and Drop Design With Cool Page

Web Site Editor

By Linda Roeder, About.com

You can learn Web design even if you don't know HTML, and you never intend to learn it. Anyone can design a Web site of their own and you can too. There are many editors out there that can help you with Web design. They are called Web design editors and Cool Page editor is just one of those editors. With Cool Page you can design fabulous Web sites, and best of all, you can download a full trial version of this program for free from their site.

Creating a New Page

When you open the editor the first thing you will see is a box of options. You choose what you want to do just by clicking on your choice and you are ready to get started.

If you choose the option to create a new web page another box will open asking you give your page a title and add meta tags for your page. From here you can also change the default settings of how your page will be aligned on the browser and how your text color shows up. When you click "OK" you will be asked to give your page a file name. After you have done this you will be ready to start building your first Web page.

Adding Clip Art

You will be given lots of clip art to choose from. Some of the categories of clip art you have to choose from are backgrounds, bars, buttons, counters, text and animation. You will also be able to add your own clip art and are even given separate places on which to add new categories if you so wish.

To add an image all you have to do is click on the image of your choice with the right mouse button (the one you usually use) and hold the button down while you drag the image onto the page where you want it. If you are not happy with the placement of the image on the page and want to move it elsewhere all you need to do is move the mouse cursor over the image until you see a cross with arrows on all 4 ends then click and hold with your mouse and drag the image where you want it.

When you are finished adding images just click on the X at the top of the box to close the window. If at anytime you want that box back to add more images all you need to do is find the icon at the top of the program that says "Object" and click on it and it will open back up.

Add Your Text

You are probably anxious to start adding text to your page so lets do that now. Click on the icon, at the top, that says "Text Box" and make sure it looks like it has been pushed in. Now click on your page where you want to add the text, hold the mouse button down and drag it to make a box. You will see a dotted line in the shape of a large box when you are finished. Click inside the box and you will see a cursor. Start typing.

After you have finished adding your text to one part of the page you may want to add more text elsewhere on the page. Just do the same thing over again and soon your page will start to look like a "real" Web page.

If you don't like the size of the text box you can change it by going to one of the corners of the box, with your mouse cursor, until you see a diagonal line with arrows on both ends, and clicking and dragging until the box is the size you want it to be. If you want to change the positioning of your text you can move it the same way you moved the images before.

If you want to make some of your text bold, underlined, italicized or have a line through it you can do so by just highlighting the text and clicking on the appropriate icon at the top. You can also center the text in the text box and change it's size and font.

Adding Links

To link to another Web page from your page you must first highlight the text or image you want the link to be at, then click on "Help" and go to "Wizard". Click on the option that says "Link to page on other Web site" and click "OK". It will tell you to go to the page you want to link to and copy the address of the page. After you do this go back and click on "OK" and it will automatically create the link for you.

See Your Finished Page

If you want to see what your page looks like in your browser there is a preview option that allows you to do this. To use it all you have to do is click on the icon. When you are finished with your page you can publish it to the hosting service of your choice by clicking on the icon that says "Publish" and filling in the need information that was provided to you by your hosting service.

That's it, simple as click and type. Now you can start creating pages.
