Your Web Site Can Affect Other Parts of Your Life
Be Prepared, Be Careful

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Almost every day I get Google alerts about someone losing their job, being suspended from school or something else, all because of something posted on their "personal" Web site. They're not all bad news though. Sometimes the news is about someone who gained notoriety or something good happened to them because of their personal Web site. News articles, and my opinions, posted here.

Good Side of Web Sites - Let's start with the positives. Sometimes your Web site can bring you fame, at least on the Internet. Or something good could happen to you because of your Web site. These articles are about positive things that have happened to people because of your Web site. (If you know of more, email me with them. Thanks!)

Losing Your Job - Beware what kind of information you put on your Web site, especially if people know where your Web site is. You could lose your job if your boss doesn't agree with your views or something else in your personal life. If you talk about work on your Web site you could be in trouble too.

Trouble At School - Sometimes teens put things on their personal Web site that gets them into trouble. Know that it's not hard to find someone's personal Web site. All they need to know is your name. These articles are about kids who got in trouble all because of something they posted on their Web site.

Trouble with the Law or Media - What's more important, keeping people safe from what other people write or freedom of speech? I'll leave that debate up to you. These articles are about people who got in trouble with the law or are criticized by the media because of something on their Web site.

Watch Your Kids Online - Kids are vulnerable because they are naive to the bad people in the world and are overly trusting or they think they are tougher, badder than the bad guys. Parents need to protect their children from these issues.
