Day 1: Sign Up For Hosting

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Hosting

Before you can build a personal Web site you have to aquire hosting on the Internet. For this tutorial I am going to walk you through signing up for Freeservers.com. If you don't want to use Freeservers you can sign up for one of the many other hosting services.

Go to http://www.freeservers.com and click on the "sign up now" button under the package of your choice, I'm using the free service myself. From here you need to choose how you want your domain name to appear. You can purchase a domain name of your own, if you want to, or you can use one of theirs along with your own personalized name.

I'm choosing to name my site after my boys, "3 Little Monsters", so I'm going to use "3monsters" in the domain name box and use one of their domain extensions "8m.net". On the next page you need to choose your hosting package. If you want to use their free service you need to scroll down to the bottom of the page and click "sign up". There is a down side to the free service, banners and pop-ups. If you don't want banners and pop-ups on your pages then you may want to opt for one of the pay services.

Now you need to enter your personal information. Don't worry, it's not too personal. Type in your password and go to the next page, you are now ready to log into your new personal Web site. When I reached this part I was presented with a commercial page. If you want to get past this quickly scroll to the bottom and click "Next". Save this page to your Favorites or Bookmarks. This is the page you will come to when you want to work on your Web site or view the pages.

Scroll down this page to your email options. Before you start working on your Web site you should set up your email. Choose the option that's right for you and set it up now.
