If you love to write then you're going to love Gather. Although this may not be the best social networking site on the Internet for the average person, it's a great site for people who like to write stories, poetry or anything else.
The community on Gather is very strong. There are writing groups that you can belong to and the people in charge of each group are dedicated to keeping their group going strong. I receive a message at lease once a week from the groups I belong to letting me know what's going on in the group and what I can do to help.
