Creating Web Pages For Kids & Parents

About.com Rating 5

By Linda Roeder, About.com

This book was written with small children in mind. With help from an adult any child can now create their own Web page using this book. The directions are very easy to read and follow along with. It also comes with a CD. The CD has clip art, sample Web pages, and some really great programs to help you create really great Web pages. You will find Web page editors, graphics programs, and more for both PC's and Mac's.

Like most of the "For Dummies" books this one also has a pull out cheat sheet to help you remember important points. This one reminds you of things not to do's and don'ts of Web page design and has places to list your favorite Web sites and info on you and your friends.

The first section of the book is for the beginner. Chapter one is lots of fun. You get to follow along with the authors nephew as he creates his Web page on Geocities. Then in chapters two thru four you will learn how to plan your Web page, put together a site, brainstorm ideas for content for your pages, and organize your pages so they all work together. Chapter three also includes information about the exercises and free clip art you will find on the CD.

In the next few sections of the book you will create your Web pages. In chapters 5 and 6 you will put them together and publish them on the Internet. Then you will find out about some really cool things you can do to them. Now you can add animation, sound and art to them. Then you will prepare photos and other images, create an animated series, record voices, and more for your site. Soon your site will look like any of those professional sites you have seen out there.

In the last couple sections of the book you will find out how the Web works. This means you will learn about HTML and adding links to your pages that will take people to other Web sites. You will also get lists of cautions and suggestions. The strategies and features found here will really help you create great pages. Then see a list of kids pages that are so good that the author thought they were worth mentioning.

In the four appendices of the book you will learn about the hardware and software you will need. You will also find out how to find sites that will help you with your Web pages and also find other kids online.

Finding important information in the book is easy. Just look for the icons included on almost every page. There is a "checklist" icon that tells you when there is a list of ideas, a "family fun" icon that tells you when there is something you and your family should do together, a "nerd alert" to warn you of technical details, and many more. It has parts organized in numbered and bulleted lists to help you easily remember things too.

Even though this book was written for children it is also great for adults who are looking for something easy to follow along with and have trouble with technical reading. It doesn't matter what your level of expertise is or what browser you are using. If you can read you can create a Web site with this book.
