JavaScript - The Definitive Guide

About.com Rating four out of Five

By Linda Roeder, About.com

The first thing I did when I received this book was open it to somewhere in the middle. What I found there was a reference of all objects, properties, funtions, methods and event handlers found in client-side JavaScript in alphabetical order. This section named each term (or code) is a synopsis and a description of how to use them.

There are also reference sections in this book for Core JavaScript and W3CDOM and also an index for class, property and methods. These are all very valuable tools when trying to write great javascripts.

This book is more than a collection of references though. The first half of the book tells you how to put together javascripts. It starts out by explaining to the reader what the basic terms used in JavaScript mean and what you can do using these scripts. It goes through and defines everything for you so even the most basic beginner will be able to understand it and create their own scripts.

It is written in a very basic way so that someone who knows nothing about JavaScript can learn what the terms mean and what each thing does. Each little section defines a term and then shows examples of how it can be used. This is great because if you don't know what a variable is you can't write a script. This way you will learn what it is first and then how to use it.

If you read this book word for word you will learn to write scripts like a pro. It has everything you need to know, and then some. The only downside to this book is that it's a little bit of a boring read. That is to say, there are no little icons with tips warnings and it is written in almost a tecnical sort of way occasionally even using big words that some beginners may have trouble with.

Overall, it is a really good book for learning JavaScript from the very beginning because it does explain all the key terms in detail before showing what they do and how they can be used. There is no doubt in my mind that if you read through this book from cover to cover, and try out all the examples and lessons along the way, you will learn to code scripts like a pro.
