HTML: The Definitive Guide

About.com Rating five out of Five

By Linda Roeder, About.com

When they say "definitive" they're not kidding. Definitive is defined as "clearly defined or formulated" and that's just what this is. This book has everything there is to know about HTML 4. I learned quite a bit reading through this book that I didn't know you could do with HTML. It's written in a very simple format so anyone can understand it and uses very small steps as it takes you step by step through writing a Web site.
Right from the very first chapter you will be able to write a basic Web page. It gives you the format and all you have to do is fill in the blanks. The next few chapters explain all the codes that you will need to make your Web page HTML4 compliant.

In chapter five you will be ready to add colors, sounds, and images to your page. In no time you will be adding tables, frames, and forms. Even if you don't know anything now this book will make it very simple for you.

At the end of the book there are several appendices. One is an HTML quick reference to help you quickly find the tags you are looking for. There is also an HTML grammar reference. It's not as complicated as it sounds. It will help you learn what tags can go inside which tags. You need to know this for some things to work correctly. Another thing that will come in handy are the character entities. They are the characters that you can use in place of keyboard characters. You will need this if you are writing about HTML or if you are writing in another language.

Attached to the back cover of the book is a pull out desk reference. You can take this out of the book and keep it in front of you when you are writing your pages for quick reference. With all these extras and the simple format you will be writing your Web pages in no time.
