Dreamweaver In A Nutshell

About.com Rating 5

By , About.com Guide

As with the entire "In A Nutshell" series, this book is wonderful. It starts out by explaining all the toolbar options and ends with some really advanced features. Everything is described very well. Once you have the basics down you can start to learn to use image maps, CSS, tables, frames, XML, layers and more.

Adding tags, links and images to your pages has never been easier. Dreamweaver has all the tags for you to choose from. Choose them from the toolbar or drop down menu and add them with a click. In the book you will see pictures of these thing and you will learn how to use them.

Fonts, colors and special characters are easy to add and change. Just click on the correct tool bar and you are designing. Right from the beginning you will start to learn to use these essential tools.

Did you ever look at the code for a Web page and notice the grey lines? Those lines are comments or notes. They help the pages designer, or anyone who looks at the code, to know what he was thinking when he wrote the page. They don't do anything to the way the page looks or works. There is a way to add these notes to you page using dreamweaver and Chapter Two will show you how.

Another useful thing you will learn in this book is how to add scripts to your pages: JavaScripts, VScripts, CSS, XML and more. There are different versions of JavaScript and each one can be used with Dreamweaver. There are also tools to help you add such things as: Flash, Shockwave, Fireworks, Java applets, Active X and Plugins.

Chapter 6 is all about managing your site. In this chapter you will learn how to use site maps and file lists to keep track of all the files on your site. One of the things you will learn is how to rename and move your pages around inside your site. Another thing, a very important thing, you will learn to do is clean up your site. Sometimes pages you are linked to go away and you need to remove the link from your site or change the link to something else. Dreamweaver provides a tool to help you weed through all those links on your site so you can find the bad ones.

Other things you will find throughout the book are: how to use templates, managing documents, creating a library and much more. Also included in the book are: ways to help you keep track of timelines, how to change the preferences in Dreamweaver, ways to change keyboard shortcuts, menus and other interface items, how to build a course and more.

This book has everything you need to know about one of the most popular HTML based Web site editing programs on the market. It's not only for the advanced Web site designer, it's also for the absolute beginner. It is not an HTML or design primer though. If you don't already know these things you will need to learn them. I recommend one of the other "In A Nutshell" books. I loved the book so much it has made me consider switching my HTML editor over to Dreamweaver.
