Online Diary 101
Entries: Adding Pictures

By , About.com Guide

What makes a Web site more personal than pictures? Nothing! If you really want to catch your reader's attention then you need to add some pictures.

When your reader's are reading your entries they will be visualizing things trying to get an idea of what you are really saying. They would be able to do this better with pictures, or even just a clip art of something that relates to what has been written.

After they have done some reading around your site they will start to wonder what you look like. Knowing what you look like will give then a better idea of who you are. That's what they are reading your site for, to find out who you are.

Having pictures of you and things that are about you will also make people want to read your diary more. They will start to feel as though they really know you. Then they will need to know what is going on in your life all the time. Soon you will have lots of regular readers to write to.

If you really don't want to add pictures of you or your family you certainly don't have to. You could use pictures of things that are personal to you, or graphics that coincide with what you are writing that day instead.

Take pictures of things around your house. Do you have a special Teddy bear? Talk about it and add a picture. If you discuss the new furniture you just got the other day or an antique clock you got from your grandmother, add a picture of it to go along with the story.

Maybe you don't have access to a scanner. Even if you can't put pictures online you can still add graphics. Search through the Web Clip Art site on About and find graphics that help to enhance what you're writing. When you find the ones you like add them to your pages.

Next time you are reading someone's Web site look around at what types of pictures and graphics they have. You may be surprised at what you find. Notice how the graphics add to the site in a pleasing manner and make you feel as though you belong there. Then decide what kinds of pictures and graphics you want to add and add them.
