Online Diary 101
Entries: Where To Link To And From

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Linking to your other pages is always important to keep people on your site. The links should be in a place where they can't be missed and where they make the most sense.

From your entries a link to your homepage should be placed right at the top. You may even want to consider putting this link in larger letters or a bolder font from your other links. This will help people to get back to the main page so they can go on to other places on your site easily.

The link to your index or archive page should be next. This helps them find other entries when they are finished reading the one they are on. If they like what you have to say one day, maybe they will like what you have to say on other days, so you should make it as easy as possible for them to find those entries.

Also create a link to your biography page from your entry pages. If your reader is reading your entry and want to learn more about who you are they can just click on this link and find out what they need to know. If they can't get there easily they may loose interest in you and leave your site altogether.

Wouldn't it be fun for your interested readers if they could go from one entry to the next entry with one click? They could click through your whole life in order one day at a time. You can help them do this by placing a link on each entry page to the previous day's entry and to the next day's entry. This may take a little more work on your part but will make for a better experience for your readers.

You should link to your current day's entry from your homepage. This gives your readers a great place to start when they want to read your diary. This means changing the link on your homepage each time you write a new entry.
