Shoot Your Screen

Add It To Your Site

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Create a Screen Shot

Have you ever wanted to show people how you did something on your computer? Maybe you learned how to use that cool new graphics program that you bought or you want to show off the cool new desktop picture you downloaded. The problem is that the person you want to show it to doesn't live near you so they can't just come over to your house to see it.

You can still show it off. As a matter of fact, you could add it to your Web site and show it to everyone that goes there. All you have to do is turn it into an image, download it to your site and link to it. Does this sound really difficult? It's not as hard as you think.

Before you get started, you will need to make sure you have a graphics program on your computer that will paste an image from the clipboard. There are many programs that you can use for this. Almost any graphics program will do. My personal favorite for simple things like this is Irfan View. There is a listing of other programs that will work, and will also allow you to change the picture to look any way you want,on my graphics tools page.

The first thing you should do is to get your computer screen to look exactly like you want the picture to look. Close all the windows you don't want to show. Move your desktop icons into a folder, so your desktop won't look so messy. If you want a picture of a specific program, open it.

Once you are ready you will need to hold down the "Alt" button on your computer's keyboard and then hit the "Print Screen" button. On my keyboard the "Print Screen" button is located all the way at the top and third from the right, yours may be different.

Now open your graphics program. Click on the word "Edit" in the top bar, then scroll down to "Paste" and click on it. Your screen shot will suddenly appear. You can now make changes to the picture if you want to. Then you should save the picture so you can send it to your friend or to your Web site. Give it a name you will remember and put it somewhere where you won't lose it.

Add It To Your Site

Now that you have your screen shot saved to your computer all you have to do is upload it to your site and add it to your Web page. Uploading it to your site is done the same way you upload any other picture to your site. You can FTP it or use the file upload program that your hosting provider offers.

Then you need to add a link to it on your Web page. The first thing you need to know when adding a link to a picture is what the address of the picture is. If your Web page address is www.homepages.com/mysite/hompage.htm and you uploaded your picture to the main folder of your site then your pictures address might be something like www.homepages.com/mysite/picture.gif.

Once you know the address of your picture you need to add it to the code for linking to a picture. The code will look something like this:

<img src="http://www.homepages.com/mysite/picture.gif">

If the picture is in the same folder as the page you only need to use the name of the picture and not the whole address. Now upload your new page and show off your new screen shot.
