(About.com) INTERESTS & HOBBIES SITE PROFILE

Name Of Site: Brian W. Fairbanks-Writer
URL: http://www.angelfire.com/oh2/writer

About your site:  part 1
profile page 1 2 3

Why did you start writing your Web site?
The main reason I started my site was to promote myself as a writer and hopefully have people flooding my inbox with employment offers, but it's also a way to be creative. Mainly, it's fun.

What is your site about?
My site is about a lot of things, but I guess it is primarily about movies. I am a lifelong cinema buff so I have posted various essays about film that I have written, such as one about film noir and another about actor Richard Widmark's contributions to film noir. There are links to reviews and actor profiles that I've written for a site called Movienutz, as well as links to comments I've posted at the Internet Movie Database and Amazon.com. But there are also essays on literature, including one about Benjamin Franklin's lasting influence in American society, and one about author James Baldwin. There's also some humorous stuff like "Frank Sinatra's Christmas Carol" (well, I think it's humorous).

Why do you write a site about writing?
I'm a writer, and writing is one of my main interests and hobbies. Movies and books are my other main interest and hobbies, so it's only natural that I would write about movies and books.

Do you communicate with readers of your site?
I receive emails from time to time from visitors to my site, and I almost always respond. Sometimes they want to point out that they agree with something I've written. Other times they want information ("Do you know where I can find that movie on video?") or help with their homework ("I have to write a paper about 'The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin' and since you wrote about him, could you help me?')

How much email feedback to you receive from your site? Is it mainly positive or negative?
I can't say offhand how much feedback I receive although it isn't too much. I don't get that many visitors, sometimes as few as one a day (It can be lonely out here in cyberspace). However, the feedback I get is almost always positive.

Have you met any new friends because of the site?
In a way. I wrote a profile of actor Richard Widmark for a site called Movienutz that one of his fans read and liked, and she invited me to join her Widmark fan club at Yahoo. The profile is linked at my site, but I don't think she found it there. However, I have since built a site within my site about Widmark primarily because of the response I received about that profile.

Has your motivation changed over time?
Not really. I'm still looking for fame and fortune or a reasonable facsimile and still just doing it for the fun of it.

How has it changed your life?
It's given me one more distraction from grim reality, and that's always welcome.
