When you're reading someone's personal Web site the one thing you probably look for is a page telling you who the person is. You probably want to know who you are reading about. You might want to know if the writer of the Web site is a man or a woman, how old they are and if they have anything in common with you.
That's why when you create your personal Web site one of the things you should do is tell your readers who you are. If you don't give your readers enough information they won't know who you are. Some people may leave your site if they can't figure out who they're reading about. Never assume that just because you have a name and picture of yourself on your site that someone from another country will know if you are a man or a woman. There are many different cultures on the Internet and with different cultures comes different looks, cloths and names.
Some things you should make sure to mention:
- Are you a man or a woman? - Like I mentioned above, just posting your name may not be enough. Some names can be male or female and some names don't span other cultures. For example, someone from China may not understand the name of someone from France.
- Where are you from? - This is just an interesting fact you should add to your site. I don't mean post your address or even city, you certainly don't want to do that. I mean something general like what country you're from. I find it extremely interesting to know where people are from.
- How old are you? - This isn't relevent to all sites but sometimes it's fun to mention if your site has something to do with your age. Sometimes teens write sites to help other teens. That person would want to mention that they are a teen too.
- Hobbies and Interests - Do you like Sci-Fi? How about sewing? Maybe you're an animal lover? What are your interests? Your readers what to know more about who you really are.
- Do you Work? - What kind of job do you have? Do you volunteer for a special organization? This might not be the most interesting thing on your site but it does let your readers know more about what kind of person you are.
- Married? - Are you married, single, dating, in a serious relationship? Believe it or not this matters.
- Fun Facts - Is there something special, or not so special, about you that your readers might find of interest? Tell them about it. You can create a list of facts about you just for the fun of it.
- When did you start your site? - Your readers might be interested to know how old your site is especially if you've been managing your site for a long time. That gives them hope that they can do it too.
Some people, and you may be one of them, feel that they don't want to give out any personal information. That's fine. You don't have to. Only put things on your site that you are comfortable sharing with the world. If you don't want to say what country or city you're from, then don't. It's up to you. Afterall it is your Web site.
