Online Diarists Speak Out

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Online diaries have come a long way since the beginning of the Internet. They started out with a few individual people writing their diaries online just to have a Web site or just to have a place to keep it where their family would not be able to get their hands on it and read it. They have now evolved into long stories that are public for all to see. Sometimes even friends and family are invited to come read it. This can cause conflicts at times but the author of the diary has to determine whether that is something they are willing to put up with. Some of the online diaries are really not any more personal than a site about family. Others, though, are so intimate that they have to have a warning on them.

They are now advertised and marketed just like any other personal Web page. There are even Webrings devoted just to them. If you have an online diary of a specific type you can go and sign up for the appropriate Webring. Then other diarists and voyeurs alike can find you more easily and read your diary. There are also sites to help people write diaries online such as MetaJournals and places where you can start your own diary without knowing HTML or keeping a Web site such as The Open Diary.

In interviews with several online diarists over the next few months they will tell you why they write their diaries out there on the Net for all to see. Why they post intimate details of their lives and their most treasured thoughts and dreams where loved ones and strangers alike can read them and judge them. In these profiles of themselves they will tell you how they see online diaries and what they think their viewers get out of reading them.

Her site is called Naked Eye and just wait until you see what she has to say. You will hear from the author of the site Phatz.com who also has a Webcam for you to view. After that a young woman who calls herself Ceit will tell you about her diary Fenix: Book of the Amber Dragon Vol 2.

Diaries are supposed to be personal. Throughout time they have been this way. Times are changing and the Internet proves that everyday. You may be one of those people that really can't understand why anyone would write a diary and let everyone read it. If you are then you are probably really appalled at the thought of someone reading about someone else's personal life.

On the other hand you may be the opposite type of person and find these online lives absolutely intriguing. If this is the category you fall into then you are really going to love this series of profiles and the ones to come. Now you can really get into what they are really thinking. Online diaries can be captivating like a soap opera when you watch it everyday. After a while you can't stop.

Other diarists you might hear from are thatP, Dreaming Among The Jade Clouds, Mad In Pursuit, and Eccentricity. After that there will be profiles done on other sites. Any personal site can be profiled. These profiles are only as personal as the author of the site wants them to be. I don't want anyone to be uncomfortable when answering questions. If you would like your site to be profiled or if you know a great site that you think should be profiled let me know.
