4th of July - American Independence Day
Fireworks and Freedom

By Linda Roeder, About.com

Happy 4th of July! I hope you have a wonderful, fun filled day.

In the United States we celebrate Independence Day by having picnics, playing with friends, parades and watching fireworks when night falls. We often forget that it is much more than that. This is the day that is thought of as the day our forefathers signed the Declaration of Independence and made us a free people. It was actually signed over a few months, as the men showed up to sign it, but on this day we celebrate it.

I would like to honor this day by showing you some personal sites I have found that will educate you on the importance of this day.

  • Chronology of Events
From June 7, 1776 when Congress first considers declaring independence from the British, through the actual signing on July 19, 1776, and up to January 18, 1777 when Congress orders that signed copies be sent to each of the states.

  • Drafting of the Documents
Who wrote it and how was it composed? When was it first printed, when were the copies sent and who were they sent to?

  • Historical Fun Facts
This site is for the kids, but you can come too. Learn some American facts with Winnie the Pooh.

  • History of the United States Flag
