Clarifying Facebook's Third Pary Ads
These ads are not being created and/or added by Facebook themselves. These ads are being served by third party companies and applications. Here is a statement by Facebook concerning third party ads using Facebook photos:
“Several weeks ago, we received some reports of deceptive content in ads placed within apps by developers working with third party ad networks. These ads are not from Facebook but we are concerned about any potential threat to our users’ experience. We recently had deceptive ads removed from a number of apps and prohibited two entire advertising networks from providing services to applications on Facebook Platform because they were not compliant with our policies and failed to correct their advertising practices. We are continuing to investigate to make sure ads that violate our policies stay off Facebook and may take further action against developers who host the ads.
Any ads you currently see doing this are coming from third-party ad networks and are only running within the canvas page of an application, which is controlled by third party developers rather than Facebook. We constantly review our policies to ensure that these third-party ads meet the expectations we have for user experience.”

Thanks for the great information.
Thank you
Thank you so much, I will advise also my friends to do that.
Are you sure about this? http://www.snopes.com/computer/internet/facebook.asp
Everyone should read Facebook’s TOS: “..you grant us a non-exclusive, transferable, sub-licensable, royalty-free, worldwide license to use any IP content that you post on or in connection with Facebook (”IP License”).” Basically, anything you post on Facebook (including pictures), Facebook is allowed to use. It doesn’t end until you delete it from Facebook.
Thank you soo much is realy helpful i realy was worried when one of my frineds told me she saw my photos on ad and i did not beleive her till i read your articl .I did the steps and changed my settings.Thank you again
I already heard, but only 2 days ago, so thanks for being on top of things and spreading the word!! Dave in Sebastopol, CALIF
Thanks! I’ll pass this great info onto family and friends.
Tried this, but saw no place for newsfeed and wall in the privacy section. Any suggestions?
THANK YOU!
The Facebook “ads” to the righthand side of the page are for you to know what your friends are doing. They aren’t “stolen”.
Thank you Margot! This About.com Guide is not much of a Guide!
thanks a lot!!!
Thank you for this information! My wife and I were quite upset to see her photo showing in an ad for hot singles. We had no idea how it got there or how to tell FaceBook to get their own pictures for ads! Now we no longer have to be concerned about our faces showing up in inappropriate ads! Thank you!
I was not too happy with Facebook when I read this article at 7:45am, by 7:46am my privacy settings were change, thanks!! If I ever did have a picture of mine used that way without my permission, it would be the last time I did business with them.
There is no more “opt out” on the page being mentioned. No more drop down. Just some text saying you’ve been duped. I don’t think we can change any settings here as we aren’t given any settings to change now.
Facebook disagrees. I’m inclined to believe them.
Thanks for warning and information. Saw this link through gmail news scroll. The language and down-stream effects of facebook (and others) settings is confusing. Appreciate your clarity.
I started taking my “good” photos and moving them over to Flikr. Then I “photoshopped” my profile pic into a vampire. Let’s see them use that on an advertisement!
If you read the statements here carefully, including the quote from the Facebook team blog that appears only when you click on “View Comments”, I think it’s not necessarily true that changing your settings as described in the article will actually protect you from third parties coming in and using your photo. Facebook will no longer tell your friends when you “fan” a Page, but that seems not to have anything to do with rogue third parties that are using photos against Facebook’s policies.
I tried to follow your instructions and Facebook popped up a message saying,
Worried about privacy? Your photos are safe.
There have been misleading rumors recently about the use of your photos in ads. Don’t believe them. These rumors were related to third-party applications, and not ads shown by Facebook. Get the whole story at the Facebook Blog, or check out the Help Center
Facebook has debunked this rumor. I appreciate your community spirit in posting this information, but I hope that you do a little homework next time. Also, the tone of the information seems a little disparaging and the purported actions seem out of character for Facebook.
I have seen my picture displayed in ads for applications whether I have used them or not. I don’t like the fact that they have totally disabled the option of changing our settings for ads at all!
So amazing the things we just don’t know that leave us vulnerable. Thanks for the heads up.
Actually Yoseph, this information was sent to me from Facebook. As you can see, I even have a quote up above that was taken directly from an email that was sent to me from someone at Facebook.
Thanks for this information. How do you change the settings?
I read your article about facebook ads and click on the settings. When the page came up, there is a statement from facebook saying that your pictures are safe from third parties. It say facebook doesn’t allow the pictures to show. Is this true or false. Go check it out on facebook.
Great information! Why would I want my photo used without my knowing it!!!
I don’t think most people realize just what they are doing with these facebook sites, and just what they are giving away!
