Track Your Comments

Thursday July 9, 2009

If you leave a comment on a site, make sure you leave your email address. Yes, you're real email address. Most sites either have you sign up before you leave a comment or just have a space for you to add your email address. This is not to spam you, really.

There really is a purpose to using your real email address when you leave a comment on a blog or on a news site. Its so you can continue being part of the conversation. Whenever someone else leaves a comment on the same article or post, you'll be notified. So if someone disagreed with you, you can go back and tell them what you think. Sites like Facebook let you track your comments automatically. Every time you get a comment, you get an email letting you know.

If you decide that you no longer want to be part of that conversation, you can always opt out of it by using the unsubscribe link at the end of every email you receive.

Mahendra Palsule at MakeUseOf.com suggests using a comment tracking system. I'm not really sure that's necessary for many blogs, but may be for some. You may want to give it a try. Try out the comment tracking system by leaving comments here and tracking them. Then come back and let me know how it works.
