Safety of Kids or Personal Journals

Sunday February 5, 2006
Kids need to keep their personal information offline for safety's sake. This school's Superintendent gives his opinions.

"some children have freely written about difficulties at home involving abusive and/or drug-abusing parents. This kind of writing, he said, sends an inviting message to sexual predators."

What's more important, freedom of speech for children, or safety of children? Kids think these Web site profiles are nothing but a place for them to freely write what they think without any repercussions. What they don't realize is that there are bad people out there looking for kids just like them.

If little kids want to write a journal on their computer that includes personal information then maybe their parents should get them a nice journaling program that doesn't post anything on the Net. They can save their information to a disk and keep the disk hidden if they want to keep it private.

If they want to run a Web site then they need to learn not to post about personal information that can leed people to them or get them in trouble. Personal stuff offline, anything else online.
