Men and Women Design Differently, No Surprises There

Saturday August 13, 2005
Here's something to keep in mind when designing your Web site. Men and women like different things when looking at a Web site. Also they tend to design there own Web pages differently. Personally......

Personally, this doesn't come as any big surprise to me. Men and women have always liked different things. Whether it be clothes, jewelry, furniture, colors, you know men and women often have trouble agreeing on these things. Why should Web pages be any different?

According to a study at Glamorgan University Business School in Wales this is the case. Men prefer darker colors while women preferred colored backgrounds.

The fun part of this study, for me anyway, was that these people were shown Web pages and it turns out that men liked Web pages created by men and women liked Web pages created by women.

I understand completely. Over the years I have views thousands of personal Web sites. I prefer women's because of the colors and designs. They tend to use designs in the backgrounds more and designer text.

On the other hand some of my favorite Web sites, after reading through some of the, are from the men. Men who create whole Web sites really do put there all into it and their sites make for really great reading.

So next time you're creating a Web page, think about who you are creating it for. Isi your audience made up of men or women? Should you design your pages with flowers or straight lines?
